Feminist, Hero and Icon Josephine Baker (b. 1906) She preformed bare chested on stage at the Nelson Theater – Kurfürstendamm 217 in Berlin where she conquered the city as “Black Venus” on Silvesternacht 1925/1926. Years later she was run out of the city by Goebbles as a degenerate for her overtly sexual dances. Back in France she joined the Résistance movement.
After the war, she was the first celebrity from France to perform in her beloved Berlin which now lay in ruins. Original photo by Paul Nadar – 1930 (Public Domain)
